CHAPTER 3
PIPELINES AND PlPELINE TERMINALS
Northem States Power Company (NSP)
NSP owns and operates two odorized natural gas pipeline systems in Roseville. One
system is their transmission system, the other their distribution system.
The transmission system consists of 20 inch, 16 inct, 10 inch and a small amount of 6
inch pipe. This pipe is installed n the boulevards of Rice Street, County Road "B" ana
aiang Hamline Avenue as shown in Figure 9. During the summer of 1994, NSP
refocated and insialled new 10 inch pipe between County Road 'B-2' and County Road
'C' as part of Ramsey County's road reconstruction progam in that area_ The system
operates at a pressure of 175 pounds per square inch gage {psig). The steel pipe is
coated and cathodically protected. {Additional technical information about this pipeline
system is contained in the Fact Sheets of Chapter 4).
To maintain an adequate supply of natural gas during high demand periods, a 20 inch
pipelire from NSP's Lake Efmo system joins the Rice Street pipeline at Rice Street and
County Road B as shown in Figure 17. The pipelines, valves and pressure regulators
at this location are enclosed in a residential bungalow type house so as to blend in with
neighboring properties. The equipment is electrically operated by remote control from
NSP's St. Paul Dispatch Center. ,
Automatic pressure regulators, located throughout #he City, control and reduce the
pressre #o the distribution system. Pressure regulators are also equipped with
pressure relief vaives.
Line markers, Figure 5, appear irtermittently on utility poles and on formed steel posts.
The naturai gas distribution system, Figure 10, consists of steel and plastic pipe
ranging in size from 1/2 inch to 8 inch_ The pipe is installed in ihe boulevards of
vituaiy every Roseville street. The system operates at pressures ranging from nnro
psig to 60 psig, and provides natural gas to afl NSP customers in the community.
Original pipe in this system is steef; plastic pipe is used in new installations and where
repiacement is needed.
Pressure reguEators maintain a uniform pressure a# user locations as well as to reduce
system pressure. Pressure relief valves are an integral part of this system. (For
additionai information about the distribution system refer to the Fact Sheets of Chapter
4).
3-1
