There are no "after installation on going" inspections specified in Code 30 or the
Uniform Fire Code.
Above GroUnd Storage Tanks Come in a Variety of Designs (from Fire Protection
Handbook, 19fi9 Edition)
♦ Atmospheric - tanks for pressures of 0 to .5 per square inch.
♦ Low pressure tanks - pressures .5 to 15 pounds per square inch.
♦ Pressure tanks - pressure above 15 pounds per square inch.
Pressure type tanks and pressure vessels are used normalfy for vapor conservatio for
liquids having high vapor pressures.
Four Different Types of Tanks
1. Ordinary cone roof #ank.
2. Floating roof tank - roof moves up and down with level changes.
3. Lifter roof tank -#iquid seaed roof moves up and down with voEume of vapor.
4. Vapor roof tank - has a flexible diaphragm at the tank's roof and moves with
vapor volume changes.
The probability of a fire in an approved tank is much less than a fire in an ordinary
building_ Where tanks are adjacent #o a building, the fire in the building exposes the
tanks more often than the tanks expose te buildings.
A major factor in fires involving storage tanks has been either the fatlure of the piping or
tie valves controlling the tanks (corrosion problems).
Floating roof tanks provide maximum fire safety for above ground use; thus they are
permitted to be located closer to a property line than other types of tanks. Expfosions
can occur when the floa#ing roof tanks are near empty and a flammable vapor is
created.
Cathodic Protection
Cathodic protection, as mandated by federaf regulation, is a method of mitigating
external pipeline corrosion which is defined as the eroding of a metal pipe by
electrochemical action. When naturalty occurring electricity enters the metal (cathode),
metaf will be consumed where a current ieaves the metal (anode). This reaction can be
inhibited by electricaify energizing the pipe (cathode) and placing high silicon casi iran
or pieces of graphite in remote ground beds (anodes) in electricaf contact with the pipe.
Thus, the iron or graphite will be corroded, no# the pipe. Another method is to
electricaiiy connect the pipe with a metal higher in the electro-motive force series. The
5-5
