STOM Polvn DESCRIPTI4NS
Central Park
For a map of storm ponds within CenCral Park, please refer to Figure 6.4 in the previous
section.
Community CP-P6
Storm Pond
Qualitative Rank: Medium
Area: 1.4 acres
This pond is located at the southeastern outlei of Bennett Lake. It receives water from the
lake tnrough a metal spillway. Other sources of hydrology inputs are from surface
drainae of the parking lot and a 42-inch RCP stormwater inlet on the southwest corner
of the pond. A 24-inch RCP acts as the outlet for the pond anc extends east eventually
drainirg inta a raadside ditch, then into W4.
The pond has steep sloped banks with little emergent vegetation. A narrow fringe of
cottonwood, willow, and aspen exist on the western edge. Some emergents on the south
edge include: soft stem bulrush, spike rush, reed canary grass, and smartweed. The pond
is isible from trails an all sides and the bridge over the channel from Bcnnett Lake.
The water had a dark b een appearance and about 25-percent filamentas {floating) alal
colonies. Low submerged veetation was observcd. Ducks, eese, and redwing
blackbirds where observed using the }ond. This could be due to the high presence of
water bugs.
The National Wetland Inventory map indicates this basin was a shallow marsh with open
pockets of water that at one tizne extended to Victoria Street to the east and ncar thc
houses lo the souEh. A turf area along the east side of this basin historically was a
shallow marsh_ This area does not appear to be acliveIy utilized and due to its elevation
near the pord normal watez level it would be reiatively easy to restore to a shallov marsh
with excavaEion or a wet meadow with seecin.
City of Roserille
Park.r Nahrrcrl Resotirce Martagenreltf 17
