The shrub layer here varies from absent in the woodland garden area to very thick on the dry; <br />upper slopes. The most common shnib across thc community is �uckthorn, with silky dog�vood <br />bei�g the most common s�rub in the lower-lying areas. Other shrubs that are found at least <br />occasionally here include currant, common eldcr, black raspberry, smooth sumac, American elm, <br />as well as the nonnativcs Tartazian honeysuckle, amur maple and black locust. <br />The ground layer has somewhat poor species richness, with most species present being those that <br />can tolerate some disturbance. Some of the mare common species in the ground layer here <br />include the natives white snakeroot, Canada goldenrod, and Virainia sticksecd, as well as the <br />nonnatives burdock, creeping Charlie, and deadly nightshade. <br />Altho�gh the oak-dominated area of this forest is somewhat better quality, the remainder is in <br />rnoderate to moderately Iow condition. In addition, some substantial ezosion has been taking <br />place due to excessive runoff from the upsIope schooi property. Despite ihis, it is an excel(ent <br />environmental education spot and offers a wicfe variety of learnin� opportunities.
