<br />indicated their agencies have an educational requirement for ne�v recniits. Of those ��`���

<br />with such requirements, more than �0 percertt require high school degrees, 27 percent �` "°�
<br />mandate 2-year associace de�rees, nearly 5 percent require 4-..ear college de�rees, ""';'"'"'"°
<br />and fewer than l percent plan to phase in 4-year coElege de�rees over time. � ' .

<br />The FBI's re�ently released Lativ Enforc°eme�rt
<br />Of�icers Killed and flssaulted reported a 20-vear
<br />low in the number of federal, state, and local
<br />officers kilied in the line of duty durin� 1996.
<br />The Lniform Crime Keporting Program, which
<br />compiles the s�tistics, reported that 5> iaw
<br />enforcement officers wcre slain in 1996, includin�
<br />3 fedcral a�ents: t each from the FI3[, U.S. Border
<br />Patrol. and the Navajo Department of Law
