CITY OF R�SEVILLE <br />JOB DESCRIPTION <br />Updated: June, 1994 <br />Posit�on Title: Police Sergeant <br />De�artment: Police Department <br />Accountable to : Deputy Chief <br />Primary Obiective of Position <br />To directly supervise the activities of police officers and <br />others in the areas of patral, crime prevention, criminal <br />apprehension, training, planning, records, reports, identifica- <br />tion, traffic, trafiic accident investigation/prevention, public <br />education, public relations, criminal/non-criminal investigations <br />(both juvenile and adult). � <br />Ma'or Areas of Accountabilit <br />*l. Supervises or personally handles arrest situatians and <br />procedures, e�ergency services, traffic law enforcem�nt, <br />legal and judicial activities. Assumes'responsibility. and <br />accountability for all actions or inactions of persons and <br />�vents within area of responsibility. <br />*2. Directs" and supervises pfllice officers and others b� <br />assigning and/or transf�rring specific duties and work <br />schedules in order to meet the needs of the department and <br />the community. Monitors and appraves timecards, attendance, <br />overtime, vacations, holidays,.sick leave, ieaves of <br />absence, etc. <br />3. Rewards employees for excellent performance through commen- <br />dati.ons and desirable work assignments. Disciplines <br />employees whose performance/actions are inconsistent with <br />sound law enforcement practices or Department policies, <br />ru3.es, regulations, and procedures, using oral or written <br />reprimands, suspensions, and recommendations for discharge. <br />4. Hears first level grievances and attempts to resolve <br />problems, where possible, in accordance with department and <br />City policy and sound law enforcement practices. <br />*5. Plans and evaluates programs and personnel, and recommends <br />performance standards and programs. Remains knowledgeable <br />of the functions and responsibilities of subvrdinates in <br />order to advise, assist, and instruct. SupervisES, <br />recammends, prepares, and conducts appropriate training for <br />subordinates. <br />
