GLOSSARY <br /> Definitions <br /> Advanced Life Support (ALS) Advanced life saving procedures, such as cardiac monitoring, starting IV fluids, <br /> giving medications, and using advanced airway adjuncts, some of which are <br /> now being provided by the EMT-basic. <br /> Basic Life Support (BLS) Noninvasive emergency lifesaving care that is used to treat airway obstruction, <br /> respiratory arrest, or cardiac arrest. <br /> EMT-Basic An EMT who has training in basic emergency skills, including automated <br /> defibrillation, use of definitive airway adjunct, and assisting patients with certain <br /> medications. (110 hours of training) <br /> EMT-Intermediate An EMT who has advanced training in specific aspects of advanced life support, <br /> such as intravenous therapy. (220 hours of training.) <br /> EMT-Paramedic An EMT who has extensive training in advanced life support, including <br /> intravenous therapy, pharmacology, cardiac monitoring, and other advanced <br /> assessment and treatment skills.
