March 20, 2013 Item 5 . a.2 Community Dialogues City of Roseville Human Rights Commission Community Dialogues: Violence Prevention Design Team Meeting February 19, 2013 -Meeting Summary- Participants: Gary Grefenberg, Megan Dushin, Carolyn Curti, Kristen Doneen, Ariella Tilsen Possible focus and call of the dialogues: We want to be very clear about purpose and need of the dialogues and to consider asking a provocative question or state an intent that invites, calls and inspires people to come and engage in new ways. This question or stated intent is articulated in an affirmative way. We talked about the possible focus and intent (and I played around with some other similar ideas) • Building a connected and safe community • What can we do to build a connected and safe community? • What would a connected and safe Roseville community look and feel like? • Living in community: creating safe and supportive connections • Imagine Roseville: Connected, Safe, Welcoming Community 2. Possible a�roaches for the first dialogue We talked about two possible participatory practices, World Cafe and Appreciative Inquiry. • World cafe: please see attached document, which describes this practice well. Appreciative Inquiry: background on Appreciative Inquiry is also attached. The primary steps in an AI process are: o Paired interviews with someone you don't know well. Interview questions are designed ahead of time and inquiry into people's peak experience of the topic choice, e.g., when they have experienced a deep sense of connection, or community, or safety etc. and what made that situation/story possible. Likely questions also inquire into what people value most about Roseville or their community, how they contribute to that sense of connection/safety, etc.; their hopes and visions for the future of a safe and connected community.
