March 20, 2013 <br />Item 5 . a.2 <br />Community Dialogues <br />City of Roseville <br />Human Rights Commission <br />Community Dialogues: <br />Creating a Connected and Safe Community <br />Design Team Meeting <br />March 4, 2013 <br />-Meeting Summary- <br />Participants: Kristen Doneen, Gary Grefenberg, Megan Dushin, Carolyn Curti, , Corey <br />Yunke, Brian Koland, and Ariella Tilsen (facilitator) <br />We discussed roles and responsibilities. Key roles are: <br />• Gary taking the lead from the Humans Rights Commission (HRC) perspective <br />- overseeing programmatic and city connections and accountable to the <br />HRC's Program Planning Committee. <br />• Carolyn has the lead on administration, financials and PR. <br />Although Carolyn has the lead in PR, these gatherings require a highly <br />collaborative effort among the whole team to garner a solid turnout and good <br />cross-section of community participants. <br />Megan and Gary gave a brief overview of how we got to where we are today <br />regarding the purpose of the community dialogues. <br />The group then spent time reviewing the specific call and focus of the dialogues. <br />After much conversation that helped to unpack different understanding and <br />meanings of words and concepts, the group agreed to "Creating a connected and <br />safe community." We also confirmed that the dates for the two dialogues are <br />Tuesday, April 30 and Tuesday, May 14. <br />We then briefly walked through two possible participatory practices for the first <br />dialogue: Appreciative Inquiry and World Cafe. The group was divided on which <br />one they preferred. However, it was decided to change the time of the dialogues <br />from 6:00-9:00 pm to 6:00-8:30 pm (with a light meal starting at 5:15 pm). This <br />understandable change in time may point to using the World Cafe. Gary asked <br />Ariella to come with a recommendation for the next design team meeting. <br />Brian raised the question of reaching out to the growing communities of color, <br />particularly recent refugees from Burma (the Karen), Hmong, and East Africans. <br />Brian noted the number of different languages spoken at home among students in <br />the Roseville school district and questioned how can people from these <br />
