REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br /> Date: May 13, 2013 <br /> Item No.: <br />7.m <br />Department Approval City Manager Approval <br />Item Description: Appoint and Reappoint Youth to Human Rights Commission <br />B <br />ACKGROUND <br />1 <br />At their April 17, 2013 meeting, the Human Rights Commission (HRC) unanimously approved a <br />2 <br />motion to recommend that the City Council reappoint Joan Dao to a youth commissioner <br />3 <br />position for another term on the HRC. <br />4 <br />They also unanimously approved a motion to recommend that the City Council appoint Sarah <br />5 <br />Thomas to a youth commissioner position on the HRC. <br />6 <br />Current youth commissioners Julia Laden and Marie Siliciano are both graduating from high <br />7 <br />school and moving out of state later this summer. <br />8 <br />Youth commissioners have taken an increasingly active role on the HRC and it is in the <br />9 <br />commission’s best interest to appoint someone before summer starts. HRC had interviewed <br />10 <br />Sarah Thomas in the fall of 2012, but ultimately recommended appointing Ms. Dao to the vacant <br />11 <br />position.
