November 20, 2013 <br />Item 5.b.a <br />January 15 Community Conversation <br />• Commission staff will introduce the event, welcome participants, explain role of Commission, <br />and introduce Advocates staff person. <br />• Advocate staff person will briefly explain community conversation project and go through <br />evening's agenda. <br />7:00 -7:10 "What does welcome mean to you ?" <br />• Advocates staff person will lead large group brainstorm around meaning of "welcome" and key <br />components of a welcoming community. Answers will be written down on flip chart. <br />7:10 -8:00 Small group discussion <br />• Advocates staff explains mechanics of small group discussion (five questions, about 10 <br />minutes each, try to hear from as many as possible at table, etc.). <br />• Table leaders should choose a note -taker to write down what is shared during the <br />discussion. <br />• Table leaders begin the discussion with the first question. Advocates staff will make an <br />announcement every 10 minutes to help groups stay on track. Tables don't immediately <br />need to switch topics but should try to stay on track. The conversation may cover more <br />than one question at a time, which is fine, but try to get to all the questions over the course <br />of the event. <br />• Questions to discuss: <br />1. Have you, or someone you know well, ever had a problem with any of the topics you <br />identified in the large group discussion? <br />2. How did you or they work to overcome the problem? Did anyone help? <br />3. Do you see other members of the community struggling with any of the issues you <br />identified in the large group discussion? <br />4. What is working well in making sure people feel included in their communities? <br />5. What can we change as individuals, communities, and a state to be more welcoming? <br />8:00 -8:15 Large group summary discussion <br />• Advocates staff member asks for each table to report back some of the themes they <br />identified and any recommendations they made. Answers recorded on flip chart. <br />• MC takes questions from participants. <br />8:15 -8:30 Closing <br />• Participants are asked to fill out demographic forms. <br />
