Human Rights Commission <br />Meeting Minutes <br />October 16, 2013 <br />Commissioners: Scot Becker, Vice Chair Jill Brisbois, Michele Courneya, Chair Gary <br />Grefenberg, Wayne Groff, and David Singleton <br />Youth Commissioners: Sarah Thomas and Sungmoon Lim <br />Commissioners Absent: Kaying Thao and Joan Dao <br />Staff Present: Carolyn Curti <br />Also Present: Madeline Lohman, Advocates for Human Rights; Chong Bee <br />Vang, Executive Director, Karen Organization of Minnesota <br />(KOM); Eh Tha Khu, KOM Youth Academic Support <br />Coordinator; and Mu Hla Paw, Karen student at Fairview <br />Alternative High School <br />Call to Order <br />The Human Rights Commission (HRC) meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. Chair Gary <br />Grefenberg asked commissioners to introduce themselves. <br />Approve Agenda <br />Chair Grefenberg requested a revision to the agenda and that the Proposal to Host a <br />Naturalization Ceremony for New Immigrants be discussed as Item 6C. <br />Chair Grefenberg moved and Commissioner David Singleton seconded a motion to approve the <br />agenda as amended. Motion passed unanimously. <br />Swearing in of Youth Commissioner Sungmoon Lim <br />Youth Commissioner Sungmoon Lim introduced herself to the Commission and explained she <br />was looking forward to further advocating for human rights. <br />Chair Grefenberg administered the Oath of Office to Youth Commissioner Sungmoon Lim. The <br />Commission welcomed Youth Commissioner Lim to the HRC. <br />Approve Minutes <br />Chair Grefenberg noted that he had received several recommended amendments to the draft <br />minutes from Commissioner Scot Becker and Council member Bob Willmus, and that those <br />changes had been included in the revised minutes in the meeting packet. <br />Grefenberg also noted there were -two written amendments proposed by himself and <br />Commissioner Singleton. He distributed copies of the amendments. <br />Commissioner Singleton moved to amend the minutes by deleting the date "2015" and inserting <br />in lieu thereof the date "2014 "on line 359 on page 8 of the draft minutes as found in the <br />Commission's meeting packet.
