Human Rights Commission Minutes
October 16, 2013
Further discussion ensued regarding a recent misunderstanding resulting from a melee at the
Roseville middle school and previously at the high school level for the Karen community. A
fight at the Fairview Community Center -was also mentioned.
Mr. Vang indicated that `peacemaking circles' were helping these groups come together. He
hoped to see the school district become more proactive in addressing such issues going forward.
He explained that the diverse ethnicities in Roseville need to be educated about each other in
order to bring the communities together. He thought the proposed Culture Fest would be a great
event to assist in integrating minorities in Roseville. He mentioned a play that was put on by the
Rosetown Theater.
Chair Grefenberg suggested that such a play could be incorporated into the Culture Fest. He
encouraged Mr. Vang to be in touch with the Commission if there are ways the HRC could be of
assistance. He thanked Mr. Vang on behalf of the entire Commission for his time this evening.
Proposal to Host a Naturalization Ceremony for New Immigrants
Chair Grefenberg stated the Commission had indicated at its last meeting an- interest in hosting a
Naturalization Ceremony for new immigrants who were becoming citizens. He indicated
Michele Courneya has been working on this item. He questioned if the Commission was in
favor of sponsoring such a ceremony and reception.
Mr. Vang explained that many Karen members have applied for citizenship and he would be
willing to work with the Commission on such a future ceremony.
Commissioner Courneya indicated the Federal Court system would need to know how many new
immigrants the event would sponsor and three possible dates for the event. She commented the
event would take 30 to 40 minutes and could be held in the Council Chambers. She suggested
the ceremony be held in conjunction with a future HRC meeting.
Chair Grefenberg was in favor of holding the event in the Council Chambers.
There was a consensus of the Commission to move forward with the Naturalization Ceremony.
2013/14 Essay Contest
Ms. Curti requested two members of the Commission volunteer to read all of the essays from the
Essay Contest and make recommendations on the top approximately 20 to 30 submittals. Vice
Chair Brisbois and Commissioner Courneya volunteered. Ms. Curti would provide these two
members with the submittal deadlines.
Grefenberg suggested that possibly someone else could also volunteer in order to share in this
work, but after appropriate chastisement from Vice Chair Brisbois he withdrew his suggestion.
Committee and Chair Reports
Chair's Report
