Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />November 20, 2013 — Draft Minutes <br />Page 3 of 10 <br />93 Program Outreach: Commissioner Becker suggested the local churches be contacted to assist <br />94 with advertising this event. Chair Grefenberg stated he was looking to advertise the event in <br />95 December and was seeking volunteers to assist with properly advertising the Community <br />96 Conversation. He reported the school district was willing to promote this event and would be <br />97 sending out an emaiL This email would reach 4,000 households. <br />9g <br />99 <br />100 <br />ioi <br />102 <br />103 <br />104 <br />Commissioner Thao explained there were three Baptist churches the Karen community had <br />become involved with that would be great resources. <br />Carolyn Curti reported the Community Conversation would be posted in the paper and would <br />also be sent out to the City of Roseville's listserv. <br />105 Chair Grefenberg suggested the event also be posted in the City's bimonthlv newsletter, and <br />106 asked Carolvn Curti to see if that could be arran�ed. He requested the youth commissioners <br />107 speak with the minority ethnic groups within their schools to inform them of the upcoming <br />108 conversation. <br />109 <br />110 What Next?: Chair Grefenberg su�,�ested the Commission consider what results and what <br />111 follow it desired to occur from the Communitv Conversation �rogram. He r��������'�d <br />112 su ,ggested the Program Planning Committee could create a list of � opportunities for <br />113 Conversation �artici�ants to become involved in � <br />114 s�3� Roseville's civic life. This could then be handed out to those who attend the <br />115 Communitv Conversation in Januarv. Such an obbortunities for involvement could even include <br />116 upcomin� volunteer o�ortunities of which newcomer could avail themselves. <br />117 <br />11s Chair Grefenber� asked the Commission to �ive some thou�ht to this issue of how anv follow-u� <br />119 opbortunities should be offered at the conclusion of the Januarv 15th Communitv Conversation, <br />12o and asked Commissioners and the public to contact him on how the HRC could connect with <br />121 other immigrant and/or ethnic minorit�grou�s. <br />122 <br />123 He added that the HRC had established communication with KOM with re�ards to the Karen <br />124 communitv, and had initiated contact with some of the minoritv student �roups at the Roseville <br />125 Hi�h School., but em�hasized that this was not enou�h considerin� the varietv of communities in <br />126 Roseville. <br />127 <br />128 Commissioner Courneva encoura�ed the Commission to see the Januarv 15th Community <br />129 Conversation as the initial attem�t to ask minoritv communities not onlv on their rece�tion in <br />130 Roseville but how thev might wish to become involved in their communitv, followed bv the <br />131 A�ril Naturalization Ceremonv and Rece�tion, and concludin� with the June Culture Fest.. She <br />132 said this should be seen as part of an on�oin� effort on the part of the Commission and the <br />133 Council on becomin� a more welcoming or�anization, as well as creatin� a Welcoming <br />134 Communitv. Courneva noted that she had seen this as a theme articulated at the HRC's ioint <br />135 meetin� with the Council last summer. <br />136 <br />
