, .
-

not nearly as attractive at this time, but it could be made to be more
attractive. The DNR does not want chemicals added to it though, for they say
the green growth is duckweed which is food for the ducks. I have personally
enjoyed the ducks on many occasions. One duck even let me pick it up!

Another issue which should be watched is that these ponds are used for
controlled storm water drainage.

Returning to the map, the most important part of the trail in Lauderdale
would connect this small park on Ryan (with the view of the ponds, golf
course, trees, and ducks), the Lauderdale Community Park southwest of the
intersection of Roselawn and Fulham, and a rather new park we've developed
called the Lauderdale Nature. Area between Pleasant and Fulham about a block
south of Larpenteur. This is part of a mile or so of wooded area with a
small creek which in part was the intercampus street car right-of-way. I
invite you to take a look at it. What a treat it is to have something like
this wooded area right in the heart of the Metropolitan Area. We plan to
keep it natural. If there is a dead tree, it will remain unless we find it
to be unsafe for people. To the east of this area is a continuation of the
trail into Falcon Heights. These portions of the trail in Lauderdale and
Falcon Heights in the wooded area are overhung with trees which makes for a
delightful walk. To the north in Roseville there is a delightful little pond
just north of Skillman. And Acorn Road is also delightful; it's an
unimproved street through an attractive woods. I am not overusing the word
delightful. I have some trouble with the portion of the trail along Highway
280 for reasons of safety and noise, but it may be workable.

Please think about this trail concept. It's just an idea at this time;
prior to this letter the Planning and Zoning commission and the City Council
of Lauderdale have not seen it. I have talked on two or three occasions to
another councilperson in Lauderdale and to the chairperson of the Parks and
Recreation Committee in Lauderdale. Both like the- idea. I presented the
idea to Janet Wiessner, Falcon Heights City Administrator, to Carol Kriegler,
Falcon Heights, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, and to
Steve Sarkozy, Roseville, City Manager. It's a preliminary trail concept.

I know that this is a rather small area for Roseville, but I believe this
little trail will be pretty neat! I am sure people in Roseville, Falcon
Heights, and Lauderdale will enjoy it.

Cordially,

JJLQ~

Willard Anderson, Mayor

Attachment: Map of Preliminary Trail Concept

c Lauderdale City Council
Lauderdale Planning and Zoning Commission
La Vanche O.
