Summary of Comments from Community Engagement Commission's
Joint Meeting with City Council
April 14, 2014
1 Opening Remarks by Mayor Roe: I will direct the discussion since you do not yet have a
2 chair. When we have joint meetings with the Council your chair and I will jointly chair and guide
3 the discussion.
4 Each commissioner introduced themselves. Mayor acknowledged presence of Gary Bowman,
5 staff liaison to the Commission, at the table.
6 Some housekeeping things: Most communication will go through Bowman primarily. Shortly
7 after this meeting you will have an informal gathering to discuss how you wish to proceed. At
8 your first formal meeting you will appoint a chair and vice chair at your first meeting, an annual
9 appointment for each commission.
10 As for tonight we will proceed as we did with the Finance Commission: each council member
11 will provide thoughts or items of interest to the Commission, and then there will be some back-
12 and-forth between Commission members and the Council.
13 Council member Lisa LaLiberte: Even in you have an informal meeting (referring Mayor
14 Roe's comments) that will have to be officially noticed.
Zs Council Members Thouhts & Items of Interest
16
17
18
19
Council member Bob Willmus: Recognized by the Mayor as the first Council member up
to advise the Commission on his thoughts. Willmus, referring to web site redesign issue, said
he was interested in finding out the group's perspective. Would like the Commission to have an
opportunity to review the Civic Engagement Task Force Report.
20 LaLiberte: One comment that piggy-backs on a Willmus comment: she agreed it would be
21 good for the group to start with the Civic Engagement Task Force report, but not feel bound by
22 that. She also feels very good about the ordinance adopted by the Council, indicating that it
23 offers areas for the Commission to start with. She is very interested in opportunities for
24 neighborhoods to strengthen themselves, and for us to work with businesses; on this last point
25 she referred to working with the Housing and Redevelopment Agency (HRA) in its efforts to
26 reach out to local businesses. She encouraged the Commission to keep these items on their
27 radar. LaLiberte concluded by describing the ordinance itself as a place for this particular
28 commission to get started.
Summary of Commission Joint Meeting with the Roseville City Council pg. 1
