classes; more services for senior adults; more education and job training for
immigrants; and more activities for youth.
Municipal Services: Representatives from several Roseville area municipalities
were involved in the focus groups, and the importance of discussing the broader
area was stressed throughout the process. Nevertheless, the discussion points
seemed to center on the Roseville Parks and Recreation Department as the entity
most likely to be responsive to "quality of life" issues. Those quality of life issues
included: an improved nature center, an off-leash dog park, and expanded use of
lakes. On a larger scale, participants saw a need for a new community center and
water park. Beyond facility-based needs, focus group participants suggested that
the Parks and Recreation Department might be ideally suited to organize more
intergenerational activities, contribute to a comprehensive plan for immigrants, and
take a leadership role in building environmental awareness and "green" initiatives.
Others: Participants also noted the valuable role of the Ramsey County Library
system as a resource for immigrants, senior citizens, and teens. They also noted the
existence of the YMCA and the Roseville Area Senior Center.
Community Assets
Focus group participants expressed familiarity with many of the Roseville area's
community assets. It was interesting to note that most participants seemed
comfortable with the notion that the Roseville "area" encompasses the surrounding
communities as well. In addition to the organizations already mentioned,
participants emphasized the value of a strong faith community represented by
many churches of varied denominations. Civic organizations also drew positive
comments, as did the abundance of health and medical services available locally.
There is no formal downtown in the Roseville area, and a number of those
attending the focus groups suggested that the lack of a traditional central gathering
place diminished the sense of community. Nevertheless, participants seemed
pleased and proud of the modern suburban amenities, including Rosedale and the
surrounding developments. Despite the public transportation issues mentioned
earlier, focus group participants appeared generally satisfied with the major
highways and local road system.
CFL Task Force Final Report, February 2014 4
