Participants seemed to feel good about the channels of communication in the
Roseville area. Information is available through traditional (What does traditional
mean? Newspapers? Television stations?) means, as well as though a fairly
comprehensive network of internet and social media connections. Public
institutions were generally praised for their efforts in this regard.
Volunteerism
The notion of citizens as an untapped resource permeated the focus groups, and all
kinds of potential ideas for volunteer action surfaced. Participants themselves
expressed a willingness to serve their community tkrough volunteering in
various ways, and they expressed the belief that many others shared their desire to
do so as well. Although some volunteer opportunities exist in the Roseville area, it
was clear that participants felt there should be more. Specific examples included
encouraging more classroom volunteers in the schools, introducing formal
activities such as "Feed My Starving Children", and establishing such things as a
community garden to support local food shelves. Enthusiasm and creativity were
obvious in these discussions.
In addition to the ideas for actual projects, there was much talk of better utilizing
the experiences and skills of individual citizens in our community. Participants
also suggested finding ways to engage existing organizations and neighborhoods in
efforts to improve the entire community. There was mention of the City of
Roseville's possible interest in creating a volunteer coordinator position, and the
idea had support among focus group participants.
Recommendations
Focus groups are a natural place for brainstorming, easily enabling a free flow of
ideas. Many wonderful thoughts were expressed during the dialog process in the
Roseville area. This section of the report attempts to distill all those great ideas into
a handful that might have the greatest impact in creating and supporting
communities for life.
1. The City of Roseville should go forward with its plans to support
volunteerism, possibly as a joint venture with the school district or other
public partners. While this support is likely to take the form of a staff
person, the job description could be non-traditional. That is, a staff person
CFL Task Force Final Report, February 2014 5
