Human Rights Commission Minutes
February 19, 2014
Chair Grefenberg reported that the next highest ranked essays were #17 with a score of 140, #27
with a score of 139.5 and #102 with a score of 139. He recommended that essay #42 also be
awarded honorable mention, as it was the highest scoring essay from Group D. He explained
this would allow for each class to be well represented with a variety of discrimination topics
addressed through these essays.
Ms. Collins encouraged the Commission to consider awarding honorable mention to Essay #108
and #8, as their scores were higher than essay #42. This would allow there to be five honorable
mention awards.
Vice Chair Becker and Commissioner Courneya supported this recommendation.
Commissioner Grefenberg questioned if the HRC wanted to reconsider this to have each class
covered.
Vice Chair Becker believed that the scores were fairly telling and believed that the awards
should follow along accordingly.
Commissioner Courneya recommended only five honorable mentions be awarded.
Commissioner Grefenberg moved and Commissioner Becker seconded a motion to award
honorable mention to the following essays: Essay #17, #27, #102, #108, and #8. Motion passed
unanimously.
Confirmation of Prizes: Chair Groff asked if the HRC had any comments regarding the prize
awards for the essay winners.
Commissioner Becker recommended that each of the second place winners be awarded a prize
and that they not be forced to split the award.
Commissioner Grefenberg supported this recommendation. He stated the $50 donation to the
school could be eliminated this year as only one school participated in the contest this year, and
the prize money went into the School District's general fund without any reference to why the
donation was being made.
Commissioner Courneya agreed that this was a good point.
Commissioner Grefenberg requested that the quality of the essay contest winner reception be
improved from last year, and that the HRC allow for up to $225 to be spent on the event.
Commissioner Grefenberg moved and Commissioner Courneya seconded a motion to award
$100 for first place, $70 to the two second place winners, $35 for third place, $20 to the five
honorable mention award winners, and that up to $225 be allowed to be spent on the essay
contest reception. Motion passed unanimously.
