Human Rights Commission Minutes
March 28, 2014
Chair Groff explained he attended the annual League of Minnesota Human Rights Commission
meeting. He reported he was voted to the Board and then discussed the goals and visions for the
Minnesota HRC. He commented the group was hoping to encourage greater coordinate human
rights efforts among regions in the State.
• Option of Community Dialogue titled, "Uncovering Five Myths that Support Racism"
Chair Groff suggested the HRC consider holding a community dialogue titled Uncovering Five
Myths that Support Racism. He reported one of the speakers at the recent League of Minnesota
Human Rights Commissions meeting discussed this topic at length and he was interested in
having this speaker coordinate a dialogue that would further address this issue with Roseville,
Shoreview and Falcon Heights residents. He reported the speaker had dates available in May.
Vice Chair Becker and Commissioner Brisbois supported this idea.
Chair Groff would contact the speaker to find potential dates in May to schedule the proposed
community dialogue.
Commissioner Grefenberg recommended this dialogue be properly advertised in order to gain
interest from the public.
New Business
Commissioner Grefenberg stated this was his last meeting on the HRC. He encouraged the
Commission to follow up with residents that attended last year's community dialogues and report
on actions that had taken place since the dialogue in response to their comments. For example,
the residents that attended could be told about the creation of the Community Engagement
Commission.
Commissioner Singleton and Vice Chair Becker agreed with this suggestion.
Commissioner Grefenberg was willing to draft a letter that could be sent out by the HRC,
Staff Report
• Finance Update
• Other Items
Ms. Collins provided the HRC with a financial update. She reviewed that the Commission had
agreed to spend up to $300 for the Naturalization Ceremony and would not be spending $100 on
the Rosefest parade, as this fee was waived. Discussion ensued regarding the format of the
financial report. The Commission thanked staff for the budget information.
Presentation of Certificates of Appreciation
