Roseville, MN - Official Website
Chair Grefenberg suggested the event also be posted in the City ?s bimonthly newsletter, and
asked Carolyn Curti to see if that could be arranged. He requested the youth commissioners
speak with the minority ethnic groups within their schools to inform them of the upcoming
conversation.
What Next? Chair Grefenberg suggested the Commission consider what results and what
follow it desired to occur from the Community Conversation program. He suggested the
Program Planning Committee could create a list of opportunities for Conversation participants
to become involved in Roseville ?s civic life. This could then be handed out to those who
attend the Community Conversation in January. Such opportunities for involvement could
even include upcoming volunteer opportunities of which newcomer could avail themselves.
Chair Grefenberg asked the Commission to give some thought to this issue of how any follow
-up opportunities should be offered at the conclusion of the January 15th Community
Conversation, and asked Commissioners and the public to contact him on how the HRC could
connect with other immigrant and /or ethnic minority groups.
He added that the HRC had established communication with KOM with regards to the Karen
community, and had initiated contact with some of the minority student groups at the
Roseville High School., but emphasized that this was not enough considering the variety of
communities in Roseville.
Commissioner Courneya encouraged the Commission to see the January 15th Community
Conversation as the initial attempt to ask minority communities not only on their reception in
Roseville but how they might wish to become involved in their community, followed by the
April Naturalization Ceremony and Reception, and concluding with the June Culture Fest..
She said this should be seen as part of an ongoing effort on the part of the Commission and
the Council on becoming a more welcoming organization, as well as creating a Welcoming
Community. Courneya noted that she had seen this as a theme articulated at the HRC ?s
joint meeting with the Council last summer.
Corneya concluded that the January Community Conversation should be viewed as an initial
conversation which may give the Commission ideas on what follow -up might occur.
Chair Grefenberg concurred with Courneya ?s comments as providing a cohesive context to
the January program with its framework for three programs throughout the first six months
of 2014_
Ms. Curti stated the Neighborhood Watch program was always seeking captains and this
program provided residents a great opportunity to get to know their neighbors.
In response to Grefenberg ?s question on what opportunities for community involvement
could be offered Conversation participants, Commissioner Kaying Thao clarified that being
involved in your community should not mean just events requiring residents to come to City
Hall, but suggested that residents needed to know that the spaces in City Hall and the parks
provided by the City were theirs to use, as well as other community events in which they
were welcome to participate.
Grefenberg suggested that Commissioner Thao play a role in bring this item into more
prominence at the January program, as well as possibly giving it more prominence than
indicated in The Advocates program at the event itself
Commissioner Chair Grefenberg questioned if the Commission was interested in televising the
Community Conversation event. He stated there was concern that televising the event may
not spur honest conversation. He commented one option would be to televise the large
http:// mn- roseville. civicplus.com /Archive.aspx ?ADID =1661 &PREVIEW =YES 5/5/2014
