Ms. Curti stated it would
be difficult to televise the small group conversations; however the introduction and a
summary of the conversations could be televised.
Commissioner Courneya indicated the televising of the event could serve as a deterrent for
participants. She recommended the Community Conversation not be televised. Youth
Commissioner Sarah Thomas agreed.
Chair Grefenberg stated his recommendation was made simply to assist in educating the
broader community on the issues raised at the event.
Commissioner Becker suggested a summary of the event be produced in order to be provided
to the City Council or general public. Chair Grefenberg said that since there appeared little
support for televising the Conversation program he would drop that idea and search other
opportunities for broader community education, such as that mentioned by Commissioner
Becker.
Commissioner Becker responded that the event might provide some footage ?such as panning
the full room without sound - -for a future video on the work of the Human Rights
Commission. Becker also added that at minimum photographs should also be taken. Chair
Grefenberg thanked him for volunteering to do this.
Commissioner Courneya also suggested that possibly a follow -up article on the event and
follow -up ideas be included in City News. Chair Grefenberg asked Staff Liaison Curti if she
would consider such an article and she agreed.
HRC sponsorship of Naturalization Ceremony and Reception on April 16: Chair
Grefenberg asked Commissioner Courneya to report on this program for which she had
provided such effective leadership.
Commissioner Courneya explained that naturalization ceremonies were not approved for
evening hours, as this would require Federal Court employee overtime. For this reason, she
was recommending the HRC sponsor a naturalization ceremony on the afternoon of April 16
from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. She explained the US District Court staff was extremely excited
to be working with the Roseville HRC on this event.
Commissioner Courneya also reported that the Court official she was working with had
suggested that if the event went well it may be something the Human Rights Commission
could do on an annual basis.
Courneya concluded her report by indicating that the federal courts would welcome televising
of the ceremony.
Commissioner Thao asked if any Roseville residents would be naturalized at this event.
Commissioner Courneya indicated there would be no easy way to determine if Roseville
residents would be sworn in at the ceremony. Courneya suggested that the Commission
itself advertise this event to residents awaiting naturalization and encourage them to
participate in the Roseville event.
Grefenberg added that possibly the HRC could work with the Karen organization in publicizing
this event to Karen residents who were ready for naturalization as citizens.
Commissioner Becker encouraged the Commission to find ways to publicize this opportunity
for prospective citizens to sign up for this Roseville venue.
http:// mn- roseville. civicplus.com /Archive.aspx ?ADID =1661 &PREVIEW =YES 5/5/2014
