April 29, 1992 Page 4 ISSUE: Real Estate Signs Ol& EXISTING ORDINANCE: Real Estate signs can not be in excess of 10 square feel They must be placed.within the front yard, 15 feet from the property line for a period not to exceed 6 months. PRINCIPLES BEHIND EXISTING ORDINANCE: The placement of real estate signs are regulated for traffic and pedestrian safety concerns. Time limits are given so that a sign does not remain standing at site for a long period of time, especially after a house has been sold. PROBLEM WITH EXISTING ORDINANCE: Realtors have expressed concern that they must locate the property line in order to place a real estate sign. Many times it takes longer than 6 months to sell a home, thus the length of time a sign may rt<.main standing should not be regulated. However, there should be some regulations on when a sign must come down after it has been sold. POSSIBLE SOLUTION: Sign should be located so that "No part of sign shall be closer than 6 feet from the back of the curb. If there is a sidewalk, no part of the sign shall be located closer than two feet from the edge of the sidewalk" "Real estate sign shall be removed within seven days following the lease or real estate closing." "Only one sign is permitted per street frontage upon which the property abuts" ·b~ ~1é:N ()NCo~ f~f$'I -, L..Ù D c t-.) 11+f2-tA L 0'1S PRINCIPLE BEHIND SOLUTION: It is easier for a real estate agent to properly place a sign if the sign must be setback from a tangible object like a curb or sidewalk, than a property line that may be difficult to find. Sign removal seven days after leasing or real estate closing is a more appropriate means to regulate the length of time these signs may remain standing. ~ H-ð\AtÆ..
