Proposed Changes to Sign Ordinance

April 29, 1992

Page 12

ISSUE:

Directional Signs

EXISTING ORDINANCE:

Allows directional signs of 18" by 36".

PRINCIPLE BEHIND EXISTING ORDINANCE:

In areas where there is one way access and egress drives. it is important to have directional signs to indicate
traffic direction. These signs are restricted to a small size so that they reduce clutter and do not obstruct
views.

PROBLEM WITH EXISTING ORDINANCE:

There is no definition of Directional Signs, including whether advertising can be placed on them.

There is no definition of Off-Premise Directional signs.

The size of directional signs should be reevaluated.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION:

Defme directional signs.

Define "Directional Sign" as a sign erected on private property which contains no advertisement and is
specifically intended to facilitate the safe movemem of pedestrians and vehicles into, out of, and circulating
upon a site on which such signs are located.

Directional Signs - Off Premise will be prohibited.

The sign area should not exceed 4.5 square feet and shall be permanemly affixed to the ground. Such signs
shall not exceed more than 6 feet inheight.

PRINCIPLE BEHIND SOLUTION:

Directional signs should be defined so that they are differentiated from offpremise directional signs and so
there is no advertisement placed upon them. Since 41/2 square feet appeared to be appropriatefor this
type of sign. the size was not changed. A height limitation of 6 feet was also place upon these types of
signs.

\, ~
J,.. Cct¡ I=::.~
