77 Mid Oaks Lane
Roseville, MN 55113
April 20, 1993

Members of the City Council
Roseville City Hall
Roseville, MN 55113

Dear Council Members:

We strongly oppose the special use permit requested by Patricia Curtiss to
operate a beauty salon from her home on 1987 Aldine Street. We hope that you
will vote to deny her request.

We are a quiet neighborhood bounded by Rosedale to the north, liar Mar to the
east, and the State Fairgrounds to the south, We are surrounded by heavy
commercial traffic from the entire Twin Cities. We do not want to encourage
commercial traffic in our small residential neighborhoods.

We are opposed in principle to client centered businesses within Roseville's
residential neighborhoods. Such businesses attract strangers into residential
areas where we are already watchful and fearful for our children's safety.
The area of Ms. Curtiss's home is frequented by children from the area going to
and from our neighborhood elementary school. We do not want strangers in this
area.

We have, in the past, been targets of many burglaries.
look out for our neighbors, know the cars in the area,
the citizens as part of an active neighborhood watch.
counter to these efforts.

We have worked hard to
know the patterns of
Commercial traffic is

We are happy to have the Curtiss family join our neighborhood. We would like
them to be happy here. However, we are not happy to have them bring conmercial
traffic into our neighborhood. Commercial space is available within walking
distance of the Curtiss home. If Ms. Curtiss wishes to operate a beauty salon,
we would welcome her as a new small business owner in one of the nearby retail
and commercial establishments. We do not want that establishment next door.

We strongly urge the Council to deny Ms. Curtiss' request. We further ask
you to review and change the city ordinance which allows client centered
home businesses within residential neighborhoods--with or without special
permi t requests--grandfathering in existing business so as not to cause
hardship.

Sincerely,

~~m~

Tamara McGehee

~J,J~~

Richard McGehee
