I am the architectural project manager for the Roseville Lutheran Church's
Gathering Space and Worship Center Addition. My 20 years of practice is concentrated in religious
architectural design. Hammel Green and Abrahamson, Inc. (HGA) has a staff of 250 in its
Minneapolis office. Through 40 years of service the firm has gained extensive experience and a
national reputation in the fields of design, engineering and interior design for religious institutions.
HGA has provided design for numerous church-related projects which have received more than 20
national or regional design awards. This letter briefly outlines 1) the design process and rationale
for RosevilIe Lutheran Church's Worship Center, 2) how Roseville Lutheran Church has minimized
the height of its Worship Center, and 3) the reasons why RoseviIle Lutheran Church's Worship
Center requires a nominal 40 foot roof height.

Worship Center Design Process and Rationale

Roseville Lutheran Church received input from church groups, committees, staff, the two dozen
outside users of its buildings, and neighbors to refine the churchts future facility needs into a long
range space plan. Roseville Lutheran Church identified components for construction in 1995. In
May 1994 the congregation authorized construction of a new Gathering Space and Worship Center,
along with remodeling to transform its existing sanctuary into a multi-purpose Activity Center.

As the church1s volunteers and staff and HGA sifted through comments from prospective users
about the religious requirements for its Worship Center, the following common themes emerged:

'I
I
I

· A fundamental aspect of Roseville Lutheran Church's religious expression is fostering a sense of
community in worship. It is particularly important to this congregation that participants be
encouraged and affirmed through their collective voices in singing, and be inspired by
celebration through religious music and drama. Participants must be able to hear the Word
preached, be active participants in the Sacraments, and see other worshipers.

-4-
