The Worship Center must help members and friends to praise God witb excellence
througbout the range of liturgy and tbe different styles of worship that the congregation
celebrates.

· Music and religious drama have been, and in the future will be, an integral part of
Roseville Lutheran Churcb's liturgy. The music style includes at one end of the acoustic
spectrum choral and pipe organ worship expression, accompaniment by orchestral instruments,
and congregational singing, and at the other end of the acoustic spectrum, "alternate" worship
liturgy such as gospel, jazz, and Christian rock music styles. Thus, as with most churches,
design requirements include providing a structure that supports musical and spoken religious
expression.

· Roseville Lutheran Church strongly identified that its Worship Center must be sustaining and
familiar to those who are long-time church goers, as part of its 400 year reJigious tradition.
Just as important, it must also be inviting and nurturing to neighbors and friends who do not
have a church home.

· The Worship Center must be functional immediately. but it also must be transformable as
the congregation grows and its requirements for this ministry tool evolve. The Worship Center
requires seating for 1,300 to 1,400 people.

The Worship Center's design has followed directly from Roseville Lutheran Church's inventory of
the existing and future uses for which this Worship Center is being constructed. To respond to
these religious practice requirements, the interior incorporates several design features.

First, the Worship Center emphasizes the personal and the community. The Worship Center is
designed so that most seats will be within 65 feet of the speaker-the distance an individual can
project personally to an audience. That requirement (and the desire to conserve land) dictated
splitting the required seating into a main floor and a balcony. Many seats are angled so that
participants see their neighbors as well as the speaker. The choir sits neither behind nor in front of
the congregation, but rather wraps around one side as an integral part of RoseviIle Lutheran
Church;s membership. From the L-shaped balcony participants can see much ofthe main floor,
which draws the two levels together as a single assembly. Landings at the top of the balcony stairs
create multiple sites for religious expression.

Second. the Worship Center is designed to be physically expandable. As Roseville Lutheran
Church;s congregation grew from 13 to well over 3,000 during fifty years. its requirements for
worship space grew and changed. The new Worship Center is being designed for future growth
and change as well.

· Until Roseville Lutheran Church needs it, balcony seating will not be installed. Instead, the
area will be sub-divided for meetings, storage and part-time office space, accessible at all hours
except during worship.

- 5-
