Human Rights Commission Minutes May 21, 2014 Page 2 of 6 Old Business May 22 Dialogue Ms. Collins stated 16 people had RSVP for the dialogue and any Commissioners that wished to attend were encouraged. Commissioner Singleton stated there had been an article titled "White Privilege Survey Sparks Debate in St. Paul Public Schools." He provided a copy for the Commission. Chair Groff stated there would be some overlap between the article and the scheduled dialogue. He would bring this up at the event. Commissioner Slade stated the dialogue title "White People Facing Race" could have something to do with the low attendance. Ms. Collins stated the title used is what was presented. Rosefest Parade Update Ms. Collins the Commission had requested a car for the parade. The Commission would need to determine if they plan on utilizing this vehicle for the parade and if not then let the organizers know as soon as possible. Chair Groff stated there would also be a dance group with the Human Rights Commission group. They could do dance routines when the parade is stopped. He had told the group that water would be available. Ms. Collins suggested letting them know the parade is expected to be long. She asked if the essay winners would be participating in the parade as well. It was the consensus of the Commission to invite the essay contestants to participate in the parade. Youth Commissioner Dao stated she would be able to get a quote once she knows the dimensions of the pole that will be used to hold the banner. They will need 2-3 weeks to make a banner. Ms. Collins stated she would check with the Parks and Recreation Department to see what is available. She suggested asking if they sell the poles with the banner. She suggested setting a maximum amount for the banner based on the budget. She stated the volunteer coordinator would be starting next week and they may be able to coordinate with volunteers on making a banner or sign for the HRC for next year's parade. Chair Groff stated they could reuse signs the signs from last year.
