The former green house was demolished and buried
on-site. STS recommended that a series of test pits also be excavated in these areas.

Zappa & Son Excavating Company of Fridley, Minnesota was contracted to excavate a series of
test pits within the Dale-Western site to identify potential fill materials within the three areas
identified as disposal locations. The locations of the test pits were randomly selected by STS field
personnel to provide a representative profile of the fill materials. Test pits were perlormed within
the general area of the disposal sites, however no survey of test pit locations or elevations were
performed. The pits were excavated to below the debris into fill or native soils. Soil samples were
collected for laboratory analysis from the base of the test pits based on the findings within the test
pits. The test pits were excavated on March 3, 1994. Snow cover was present at the time of the
excavation. The locations of the three areas are identified as Areas 8 (Area A), 14 (Area B) and 19
(Area C) on Figure 3 in the Appendix.

A total of 24 test pits were dug within the three areas. Seven test pits were performed in the
greenhouse area (Area 8), one within the street sweepings area (Area 14) and sixteen within the
central dump site (Area 19).

Debris encountered in test pits A-3 and A-5 within Area 8 (Area A) consisted of concrete, bricks,
glass, wood and slag. Fill materials encountered in test pit B-1 within Area 14 (Area B) consisted
of street sweepings. No debris was encountered in test pit B-1. Debris was encountered in test
pits C-2, C-4, C-5, C-7, C-8, C-9, C-13 and C-16 in Area 19 (Area C). The debris was primarily
concrete, glass, metal, metal containers, tires, rubber hosing, plastics, wood and brick. One
crushed 55-gallon drum was observed in pit C-3.

- 2 -
