a request to fit an eight-character bar code message onto a label
less than one inch long.

"We solved that problem by producing Code 3/9 with a narrow bar width
of .005," says Marketing Manager Bruce wray. "At the time, there was
only one scanner capable of reading a symbol of that densit. Now
several manufactures have introduced very high density scanners."

As ultra-high density llabel requirements have become more stringent,
Computype has broadened its reputation as a world leader in pre-
printed sequential photographic bar code label products. With
manufacturing plants in both the u.s. and U.K. Computype is supplying
labels to a growing list of companies with both ultra-high density
and Base 31, 32, and 36 numbering systems.

~

These capabilities enable Computype to provide features that were
previously mutually exclusive: small labels with large numbers of
possible character combinations. For example, using a Base 32
numbering system (0-9, A-Z, omitting letters 0, I, s, and Z) and a
four-character message, the number of unique messages possible is
well over one million. This can be encoded in a label less than one-
half inch long (see chart attached). By doubling the message lenghth
to eight characters, the result is over one billion possible
combinations. The space required? Less than three-quarters of an
inchl

"This capability is a real problem-solver for a wide variety of our
customers," says wray. "It's gratifying to see more bar code label
users taking advantage of this enhancement to the technology.

Computype, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of bar code label products
for a wide range of applications, from offices na laboratories to
heavy industry and materials handling, and has pioneered numerous
innovations in bar code label production.

COMPANY: Computype
PRODUCT: Screen Printed Labels ex Press Sens (2751915)
TRADE NAME: Code 3/9
EVENT: Product Design & Development (33)
COUNTRY: Minnesota (1727); MN (1727)

5/9/11 (Item 11 from file: 621)
DIALOG(R)File 621:PTS New Prod.Annou.(R)
(c) 1994 Information Access Co.
