536
Chair Stenlund noted that, by comparison, the Dale Street bridge was not as wide
537
as the Lexington bridge, and the proposed slope paving would make it appear
538
even wider. With MnDOT willing to provide the additional 10' clear zone
539
requested by the City, which it currently didn't have, Chair Stenlund opined that
540
this was a great addition to the project and to the benefit of the community.
541
542
Mr. Schwartz concurred, noting that the slope paving could also be dealt with
543
differently in the future to widen the roadway if and when needed; and the lanes
544
in place now would allow sufficient width for a small shoulder on either side of
545
Lexington, and curb & gutter to provide better drainage.
546
547
As an example, Member Gjerdingen referenced the wide curb installed in
548
Minneapolis and on Como Avenue.
549
550 Mr. Culver noted that in some places the wide gutter was used as a bicycle lane,
551 even though the seam was difficul for riders to deal with, but creating a 4' gutter
552 and an 11' through -lane.
553
554 Member Gjerdingen concurred that as the pavement got woNthewas
555 difficult to deal with; and questioned how the pathway could be extended, since
556 he was aware that MnDOT preferred to have a connection point at both ends.
557
558 Mr. Schwartz advised that staff would need to look at the potential of extending
559 from Sherran to Lovell, but cautioning that MnDOT would not pay for such a
560 extension, and would not pay for even the portion they'd already agreed to, but it
561 would be up to Roseville and/or Ramsey County to pay for it at a negotiated cost
562 between them. Mr. Schwartz offered to discuss Member Gjerdingen's
563 suggestions with Ramsey County to determine their interest; however, he noted
564 that there was no construction fund dedicated by the City's levy dollars to
565 facilitate the expenditure; and would need to determine if it made sense in the
566 overall scheme.
567
568 Member Gjerdingen opin%t,if the dollar amount was small enough, it could
569 be worth bringing to the attention of the City Council for funding. Member
570 Gjerdingen further expressed his concern with crosswalks at those intersections,
571 and across th+ased
ay 36 ramps on the east/west portion of the roadway.
572
573 Mr. Schwartz that it had been decided that at least sidewalks installed at
574
the controlled intersections for ramps would provide some relief, with the intent
575
to leave all four in place as they currently exist.
576
577
Member Gjerdingen opined that it was important to him to know sooner than later
578
if that was going to change.
579
580 8.
Public Works Department Overview
