ARCHERY PARK
ery Park is a facility that will provide opportunities for individuals, families,
ups, clubs and classes of all ages to shoot any form of archery in a park -like
atmosphere. These recreation areas are meant to serve entire communities and to
support organized as well as informal archery programs.
This archery park concept was designed to accommodate the most shooting opportunity
in the smallest amount of space (5 acres) as well as incorporate kids and family -friendly
amenities which are important for archery recruitment. If more space is available then
portions of the park can be expanded, or a walking course can be added. We did not
include walking courses in this brochure because a walking course design is usually
adapted to the space and terrain at each site.
The archery park should consist of 4 areas- access area, resting/staging/observation
area, shooting area and safety area. Access areas should include parking and
walkways, bike racks and enough space for buses to turn around. The
resting/staging/observation area must include shelters, picnic tables, water fountains,
bleachers or seating for observers and restrooms (not portable) in order to make the
area family friendly. Ideally, the resting/staging/observation area should be near
playgrounds or other activity areas.
This park concept includes the use of earthen berms, netting and open space as range
safety options. We expect each individual archery park design will be modified based
upon the current and expected archery market. For example, in areas where all of the
schools within 10-20 miles of the archery park are shooting archery in class, the
beginner portion of the range may need to be expanded. Or, if there are a high number
of Olympic level shooters, more targets may need to be placed at longer distances (50,
70 and 90 meters) which will require wider safety barriers. Ideally, we'd like all targets to
be moveable so that larger class sizes or events can be easily accommodated.
A more specific discussion of general archery shooting needs and safety is contained
on the following pages.
