I) R A F T- Minutes - LAI C; Planning Committee <br />ittee <br />Meeting 45, August 23, 2007 <br />PRESENT: Sarah Brodt Lenz, Colleen Gabor, Rich "Jake" Jacobson (Committee Chair), Julie <br />Larson, Marcy McNeal, James McNeal, Sarah McNeal, Nancy Robbins, Jim Stark, Jill Anfang, <br />Lormie Brokke, Jeff Evenson, Debbie Cash <br />GUESTS: Karen Schrag, Director, Woodlake Nature Center (Richfield), and citizen <br />DeSalvo <br />ABSENT: Stacey Dahlstrom, Amy Ihlan, Monte Johnson, Dorothy LaBrash, Rose Masanz, Gale <br />Pederson, Jeff Seifriz, Rich Straumann, Bob Willmus <br />Karen Schrag was introduced and she gave a presentation on her doctoral research in the study of <br />community-based nature centers. Key points include: <br />• Definition of "conimunity-based nature centers <br />o Encourage daily public use <br />o Environmental education <br />o Serve metropolitan community <br />o Have a graduated curriculum <br />• How to stay relevant with changing community <br />• Why support community-based nature centers: <br />o Generate sense of community <br />o Economic force <br />a Promote social stability <br />o Provide services to the widest of audiences <br />o They are for everybody <br />o Benefit those who never walk in the door — n.c.'s keep up property values, control <br />flooding, promote habitat for local wildlife (nature centers not getting enough credit <br />for doing this) <br />• People tend to give money to a cause if they sense you already have money; well-run events <br />that are profitable will attract more money <br />• .Last Child in the Woods (book) — highly recommends <br />• Where to look for money for projects? <br />o Businesses that need to look "green," people/businesses that would benefit from <br />associating with a nature center <br />o Go to advertisers in local papers (Roseville Revieiv) <br />o Increase membership (i.e., FORHANC) benefits —tangible reasons to join <br />• www.woodlakenaturecenter.or for more on her nature center <br />Nancy Robbins briefly shared a little bit about the three nature centers she visited in the Dayton, <br />Ohio and Indianapolis areas. She indicated she'd send "invitations" to view an album of photos (at <br />shutterfly.com) from these three centers: <br />• Aullwood N.C., Dayton, OH, aullwood.center. audubon.orgl <br />• Brukner N.C., Troy, OH, www.bruknernaturecenter.com <br />• Holliday N.C., Indianapolis, IN, www.hollidaypark.org/ <br />She had thrown together a notebook with brochures from these three centers and will bring it to the <br />next meeting for others to review before or after the meeting. <br />OVER <br />
