HRA Meeting Minutes – Tuesday, May 20, 2014 Page 3 1 of Member Etten, Ms. Kelsey clarified that the RHRA would only pay for Roseville non- 2 member businesses to attend, which would allow them to be identified and pre-registered for 3 addition to the database and allow interaction with RHRA staff, in conjunction with Chamber 4 assistance. Ms. Kelsey noted that as the database was developed, it would positively benefit 5 also Roseville businesses and allow the RHRA staff to engage with them. 6 7 Ms. Kelsey noted that part of the requested action tonight was to authorize staff to hire an 8 intern over the summer to develop the database. Ms. Kelsey noted that the funds for in intern 9 and payment for businesses in those Chamber events as previously noted, could be covered as 10 part of the 2014 BR & E budget as a $25,000 line item for implementation of the BR & E. 11 Ms. Kelsey further advised that she had applied for a $1,000 grant through the State 12 Department of Education and Economic Development (DEED) to help pay for an intern. 13 14 At the request of Member Majerus, Ms. Kelsey advised that the actual cost for the intern was 15 an unknown at this time; but based on last year’s Intern, the maximum paid out was $2,000, 16 which had also been subsidized by a $1,000 DEED grant. 17 18 At the request of Chair Maschka, Mr. Weinhagen chose focus topics, based on polling their 19 members for their specific interests or needs; and would also be seeking feedback from Ms. 20 Kelsey based on feedback from the BR & E survey going forward based on that relevant 21 information. Mr. Weinhagen advised that the first educational seminar had been Dale 22 Carnegie Sales Management training. 23 24 Ms. Kelsey advised that the June seminar topic was succession planning, something identified 25 by a number of the forty-one businesses participating in the BR & E survey. Ms. Kelsey noted 26 that another focus area identified by survey participants was development of a business plan, 27 with 51% of those businesses not having one at this time. Ms. Kelsey opined that there are 28 numerous opportunities, including exporting and foreign trade processes; along with other 29 information obtained from the survey that would guide topics of interest going forward, 30 including additional information as business visits continue. 31 32 Chair Maschka suggested new technology to assist businesses was another timely topic. 33 34 At the request of Chair Maschka, Ms,. Kelsey clarified that the e-mail addressed obtained 35 through the survey were legally considered and would remain confidential as the RHRA built 36 its database. Members expressed their appreciation for the ability to retain information 37 confidentially. 38 39 At the request of Member Majerus, Mr. Weinhagen reviewed the opportunities for the RHRA 40 and Chamber in partnering their information and benefits for participation of those owning 41 businesses in Roseville as well; and identifying those businesses who are not currently 42 Chamber members. 43 44 Chair Maschka opined that the partnership provided good synergy all around, while not 45 creating the need to reinvent the wheel. Along with the annual Chamber event, Chair Maschka 46 further opined that four educational seminars per year were sufficient. 47 48 Motion: Member Lee moved, seconded by Member Majerus, of the RHRA’s support of 49 co-hosting the SPACC quarterly small-businesses seminar series, co-hosting the PSACC 50 and TNACC the Roseville Business Council, and an annual Roseville Business 51 Networking event hosted by the RHRA; and to develop a database of business contacts, 52 the RHRA also AUTHORIZING the hiring of an intern to assist with the BR & E 53 Implementation Plan. 54 55 Ayes: 5
