MEMORANDUM

FILE

DATE: June 23, 1995

TO: Lon Aune, Assistant City Engineer

FROM: John Loftus, Fire Marshal

SUBJECT: Emergency Vehicle Access Ordinance

Chief Hewitt has indicated to me that the issues pertaining to the Fire Department vehicle
access would encompass the following:

1. The minimum clear width of any access roadway should be 20 feet.
2. The turning radii of any required turn around should comply with the information
I have provided to you.
3. The maximum length of a dead end street without a complying turn around area
provided should not exceed 200 feet.
4. Any street which has a width of28 feet or less should be provided with signs which
indicate that there shall be no parking on one side of the street.

These items should provide adequate emergency vehicle access to all areas of the city if they
are placed into practice. Thank you for the opportunity to respond to this issue and also for
your help with this.
