<br />303.500 SETIING VALVES, VALVE BOXES, FlTIINGS AND CURB STOPS AND <br />BOXES <br /> <br />Gate valves and pipe fittings shall be set and jointed in new pipe in the manner <br />heretofore specified for cleaning, laying and jointing pipe. <br /> <br />Valve boxes shall be firmly supported, and maintained centered and plumb over the <br />wrench nut of the gateyalve, with box cover flush with the surface of the finished <br />pavement or at such other level as may be directed. AD geared valves and such other <br />valves as may be designated shall be set in valve manholes with the wrench nuts readily <br />accessible for operation through th~ manhole openings. Manholes shall be constructed <br />in a manner that will permit minor valve repairs and to afford protection to the pipe ftom <br />impact where it passes through the manhole walls and in compliance with Section 502.3. <br /> <br />Temporary drainage necessary in the construction of the valve manholes should be <br />moved after the installation is complete or receives approval of the proper State Board <br />of Department of Health. <br /> <br />Curb stops and boxes shall be located as shown on the plans. Bacldill shall be <br />. accomplished to avoid displacement or bending of the curb box. <br /> <br />303.600 SETTING HYDRANTS <br /> <br />Hydrants shall be located as directed by the ENGINEER or his representative and shall <br />be placed as shown on 'the Standard Details of the plans. After each hydrant has been <br />set, there shall be placed around the base of the hydrant, at least one-cubic yard of <br />coarse gravel or crushed rock. A layer of four mil-thick polyethylene shall be carefully <br />placed over the rock to prevent bacldill material entering the voids in the rock drain. All <br />hydrants must be maintained in a plumb position. Hydrant extensions shall be used with <br />"the ENGINEER's consent only. <br /> <br />" 303.700 JOINT RESTRAINT <br /> <br />Retainer glands shall be used for joint restraint on all bends having a deflection of 22 1/2 <br />degrees or greater, tees, crosses, plugs, valves at the end of a line, all hydrant valves. <br />and all hydrants. Restrained joints cast onto the pipe by the manufacturer (Lok- Tyton, <br />Fastite, Mega Lug etc.), will be -considered as being equivalent to the use of retainer <br />glands. If retainer glands are not available, thrust blocking may be used with approval of <br />the Water Utility Inspector. <br /> <br />The use of zinc coated tie rods suitably attached by half-circle clamps may be utilized <br />with the ENGINEER's peImission. <br /> <br />Where valves are located on dead ends, the valves may be tied or lugged across the <br />valves with tie rods. <br /> <br />300-12 <br />
