303.800 JOINTING AND ELECTRICAL CONDUCTMTY

Before laying the pipes, the outside ofthe spigot and the inside of the bell shall be wire
brushed and wiped clean and dry. Pipe ends-shall be kept clean until joints are made.

. AU jointing of mechanical joint pipe and push-on pipe-shall be in accordance with the
requirements of the AW.W.A Standard C600.

Ductile iron pipe shall be cut only by sawing, milling or torch cutting in accordance with
the manufacturer's recommendations, provided the cut joint is properly ground.

Each joint on ductile iron pipe, valves, wet taps, hydrants or fittings, either "push-on" or
mechanical joint type SI1all be electrically bonded with an extended period of time to
provide integral electri(; thawing capabilities.

These copper jumpers can be either shop or field applied in accordance with these
specifications. For field applied copper jumpers, either the "Bumdy-Thennoweld", as
. supplied by Bumdy Corporation, Norwalk, Connecticut, or "Caldweld", by Erico
Products Company, Cleveland, Ohio will be permitted.

CONTRACTORS or suppliers shall submit the method they propose to use for approval
prior to construction.

The copper jumper sha!l be a minimum 1/16" X 1/2" wide flat strip or equal cross
section round copper wire in the annealed condition conforming to ASTM Specification
B152-58 Type DHP.

_ All copper jumpers sh~l be welded to the pipe and fittings by the metallic-arc welding
process, if shop applie< or by the exothermic welding process if field applied.

The copper jumper can; be applied as a single strip welded at each end across the joint or
by multiple strips with bolted connections in the middle. Silicon bronze bolts and nuts
shall be used on all bolted connections.

All welded connections shall be made on a clean metal surface which has been ground to
remove coating and oxide. The area at the connection, including the weld, shall be
refinished with its original coating or other suitable protective coatings specified.

The assembled copper jumper across the joints shall be so installed that expansion,
contraction, or relative :pipe movement incidental to normal service use will not damage
the connection to such an extent that electrical resistance will vary -across the joint.

The completed watermain system shall be tested for electrical conductivity according to
that sfated in testing in ~hese specifications.
!

303.900 INSULATION

300-14

,
