j
1
I

The insulation shall be placed between the stonn sewer or stonn sewer structure and the
watennain or service pipe. The insulation shall be placed in two layers, each layer two
inches (2") thick, with the joints in the upper layer offset 1/2 board width from the lower
layer. The insulation shall be held in place to prevent movement during backfill by 1/4
inch diameter by six-inch (6") long wood dowels driven through each comer of the
insulation boards into the soil below: The insulation shall extend a minimum of four feet
(4') from the centerline of the watermain or service, and a minimum of six feet (6')
beyond the edge of the stonn sewer or structure along the centerline of the watennain or
service. The actual depth, thickness, width and length to be insulated shall be
determined in the field by the ENGINEER or his representative or as noted in the plans.

I
I
~

304.0 METHODS OF TESTING AND DISINFECTION

!
1
j
J
J
)
J
J
J
J
J
J
J
J
~

..

The CONTRACTOR shall perfonn all testing and disinfecting in the ENGINEER's
presence.

304.100 LEAKAGE TEST FOR WATERMAINS

A leakage test shall be perfonned on each valved section of watennain to detennine the
quantity of water that must be supplied into each section to maintain a test pressure of
150 pounds per square inch, after the test section has been slowly filled with water and
all the air has been expelled from the line. Tbe specified pressure shall be applied and
sufficient water shall be measured and supplied into the pipe section to maintain the
pressure for a test duration of two hours (2 hrs.).

L = NDP
3,700

L =
N =
D =
P =

Maximum permissible leakage in gallons per hour.
Number of joints in length of pipe tested.
Nominal diameter of pipe in inches.
Average test pressure during the test, in pounds per square inch, gauge
pressure.

If the pipe section under test contains pipe of various diameters, the allowable leakage
will be the sum of the computed leakage for each size of joint.

The CONTRACTOR shall furnish the pump, pipe connections, gauges, and measuring
equipment, and 'shall perfonn the testing under the direct supervision of the
ENGINEER. Where permanent air vents are not provided, the CONTRACTOR shall
provide and install corporation cocks at the high points as needed for release of air as
the line is being filled with water.

Any cracks, defective pipes or gaskets, fittings, valves or hydrants discovered in
consequence of the testing shall be removed and replaced by the CONTRACTOR with
sound material in the manner provided and the test shall be repeated until satisfactory to
the ENGINEER.

300-15
