No deviation from the required line or grade will be allowed except with the <br />consent of the ENGINEER. <br /> <br />Trench excavation and bedding preparations shall proceed ahead of pipe placement as <br />will pennit proper placement and joiriing of the pipe lPld fittings at the prescribed grade <br />and alignment without unnecessary hindrance~ - Every reasonable precaution shall be <br />taken to prevent foreign materials from entering the pipe while it is being placed in the <br />line. Pipe and m.anhole materials shall be carefully lowered into laying position by the <br />use of suitable restraining devices. Under no circumstances shall the pipe be dropped <br />or dumped into the trench. <br /> <br />Before being lowered into laying position, the CONTRACTOR shall make a thorough <br />visual inspection of each pipe section and appurtenant units to detect damage, foreign <br />matter needing removal, or unsound conditions that may need corrective action or be <br />cause for rejection. Inspection procedure shall be as approved by the ENGINEER, <br />with special methods being required as he deems necessary to check out suspected _ <br />defects more definitely. The CONTMCTOR shall inform the ENGINEER of any <br />defects discovered andthe ENGINEER will prescribe the required corrective actions or <br />order rejection and prompt removal from the site. <br /> <br />Immediately before placement, the joint surfaces of each pipe section and fiuing shall be <br />inspected for the presence of foreign matter, coating blisters, rough edges or <br />projections, and any imperfections so detected shall be corrected by cleaning, trinuning, <br />or repair as needed. <br /> <br />All pipe shall be laid using grade boards or laser, furnished and set by the <br />CONTRACTOR according to the grade stakes established by the ENGINEER or his . <br />representative. No pipe shall be laid unless there is a minimum offour grade boards set <br />to check the proper grade and alignment ahead. The CONTRACTOR shall provide and <br />use a suitable grade rod to insure the p~oper grade of the pipe. Grade Boards shall be <br />no more than 25 feet apart. The CONTRACTOR may use laser equipment in lieu of <br />grade boards and strings to set pipe grade and alignment. However, the <br />CONTRACTOR shall check the grades at a frequency not to exceed 100 feet. The <br />CONTRACTOR shall provide competent workmen to operate the laser equipment. <br /> <br />At the time of pipe placement, the bedding conditions shall be such as to. provide <br />uniform and continuous support for the, pipe between bell holes. Bell holes shall be <br />excavated as necessary to make the joint connections, but they shall be no larger than <br />would be adequate, No pipe material shall be laid in water nor when the trench or <br />bedding conditions are otherwise unsuitable or improper. Unless otherwise permitted <br />by the ENGINEER, bell and spigot pipe shall be laid with the bell ends facing upgrade <br />and the laying shall start at the downgrad'e end and proceed upgrade. " <br /> <br />When placement or handling precautions prove inadequate, in the ENGINEER's <br />opinion, the CONTRACTOR shall provide and install suitable plugs or caps effectively <br />closing the open ends of each pipe section before it is lowered into laying position, and <br /> <br />-- 400-3 <br />
