<br />The Contractor shall also exercise extreme care in backfilling and compacting the trench <br />under utility conduits which cross the water and sewer trench perpendicularly. Backfill <br />immediately under the utility conduit shall be placed in lifts not to exceed one (1) foot in <br />depth and thoroughly compacted with an approved vibratory compactor. <br /> <br />15. UTILITY CUT-IN CONNECTIONS <br /> <br />The Contractor shall notify the City Engineering Department and the City Water <br />Superintendent 24 hours in advance of any shut down of the existing utility systems. The <br />Contractor shall be required to notify all affected customers as to the length of shut down <br />and the time of shut down. The City staff only will operate any existing valves or hydrants. <br /> <br />16. TRAFFIC CONTROL AND USE OF CITY STREETS <br /> <br />The Contractor shall furnish, erect and maintain signs and barricades as provided in MHD <br />171 0 "Barricades and Signs: to protect the public". The City Engineer shall be notified 24 <br />hours prior to the proposed partial blockage or closure of any street or public right-of-way. <br />No street or public right-of-way shall be closed without the proper approval of the City <br />Engineer. <br /> <br />City Streets that are utilized for access or egress to the construction site shall be kept free of <br />dirt and other debris resulting from said construction. Adequate control of dust shall be <br />maintained by the Contractor. <br /> <br />17. TESTING OF MATERIALS <br /> <br />The cost of testing of materials supplied on the project, to verify compliance with the <br />specifications, shall be borne by the Contractor. There will be no special pay item for such <br />testing. <br /> <br />18. DEFECTIVE MATERIALS QR WORKMANSHIP <br /> <br />If material or workmanship supplied by the Contractor is rejected by the City Engineer or his <br />designated representative as defective or unsuitable, then such rejected material shall be <br />removed, disposed of off the site, and replaced with approved material; and the rejected <br />workmanship shall be done anew to the specifications and approval of the City <br /> <br />-4- <br />
