Phone 1636-4600
Home 1484-6295

May 5, 1984

Cit:1 of Roseville
26610 Civic Center Drive
Ros4!ville, Mn. 55113

REGISTERED MAIL

Att:n: Mayor June Demos & City Council Members

.Re: Removal of Double Width Blacktop Driveway

Dear Mayor and City Council Members:

I h.ave been aresid~nt of 486 Southhill Drive since 1958 (26 years) and have a
nO~Dal double width blacktop driveway at the street. I have only a single car
gar,age so the driveway extends to the garage as a single width. This condi-
ti01Cl has existed at my home since 1958.

The City has ordered me to remove the portion of my driveway which is double
wid:th or else extend the entire driveway to my house as a double drive. The
Cit:1 has been unable to provide me with a dated resolution when the law pro-
hibiting this type of driveway was adopted but indicated that the rule or
policy or whatever it is was formalized in 1966 which is eight years after my
dri'lTeway was in existence.

It ,seems improper to enforce a rule retroactively especially since the appear-
anCI! and use at the street line is no different than a normal double width
dri'l7eway.

I n4!ed the space as it exists because I have only a single car garage and it
is .!wfully hard (difficult) to mOve cars to get in and out of the garage. My
lot is on a curve and cannot parkin the street for fear of getting hit by
othl!r cars. Our mailboxes (4 of them) have been hit four times and have been
replaced so you can see the danger of parking in the street at this location.

The City Staff has indicated that I could extend the double drive to my
hou:se. I live in a split level house and if I install a double driveway it
will come almost to my front door and it will involve putting in a retaining
wall which will cost a great deal of money. This will also mean that I'll end
up ,~ith less front lawn even though the use and appearance at the street line
will not change. What happened to beautifying Roseville?

It is requested that the City's order for me to revise my driveway be with-
dr~~ because of its existence prior to the rules being adopted, the location
with it's hazards for parking in the street and this driveway is not un-
s lightly and is kept up.

Sinl:erely,

t1~

-

~l~

Marion A.
