City of Roseville
,June 2, 1986
Page 2

Group members may account for 30 to 40 percent of
Costco's sales; however, their business is intended
only to augment costcot~ wholesale business.

c. Packaging. The sizes and nature of Costco's products
are different than most all retailers, especially in
the food area. For example, Costco sells pickle
products in container sizes from 46 oz. to 5 gallons,
while 2 retailer will concentrate on much smaller
sizes. In fact, if you took a typical retail grocery
outlet and compa, red its entire stock, item by item,
with the stock of a Costco warehouse, you would find
little overlap.

d. Product Lines. Costco carries a limited product
variety wi thin a particular product line. A typical
retailer such as Target will carry 40,000 to 60,000
individual items in one of its stores. A Costco
warehouse has between 4,000 and 5,000 items. Also, if
a customer wishes to buyout the complete stock of one
of Costco's pruducts, they may de so. This would not
be the case with the retailer.

e. Hours of operation. Costco does not advertise and
restricts its hours e'f operation to approximately sixty
(60) per week, broken down as follows: ~

Monday, Wednesday, Friday

12:00 Noon - 8:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Thursday

12:00 a.m. - 12 Noon
(Wholesale Only)
12:00 Noon - 8:30 p.m.

9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Saturday

Sunday

Because Costco is not open for general warehouse
entries until 12:00 noon on weekdays, Costco's busiest
traffic periods occur during the lowest volume
vehicular traffic periods. The greatest percentage of
traffic covers from 12:00 Noon until 3:00 p.m. and from
7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and weekends. In addition, conunon
carrier deliveries are accomplished by appointment only
and no more than three trucks are scheduled to arrive
per hour.
