The city had received two requests for permits for oversized accessory
permits (on Arona and on Burke Avenue).

These issues have been difficult to deal with because the city has few regulations or policies
that relate to the number of detached accessory building or the size and design of such
structures. The codes do state that the maximum height of an accessory building is 15 feet.
It was unclear whether a paved driveway was necessary to such structurest howevert the
staff interrupts the codes to state that no more than 30% of the site may be covered with gl) 1::r
i.!!!pervious surfa~. However,
an accessory building on a one acre or greater lot may have a height up to 15 feet, by setting back
an additionall foot for each half-foot in additional height proposed.

Some communities allow C?n1y one accessory building (regardless of size) on a lot. If the lot has a
detached garage, no further accessory buildings are allowed. Size is frequently regulated, with
750 s.f. being the maximum allowed without some other type of permit, usually a conditional
(special) use permit. Other cities, like Falcon Heights, simply state that the size of the structure
cannot exceed 40% of the required rear yard, or that the collective total of all accessory buildings
cann~t exceed 1,000 s.f

Some communities make distinctions between the types of accessory buildings such Cj.S the
attached provisions from the City of White Bear Lake in which Tool Sheds, Storage Sheds,
Detached Garages, House Boats and Fish Houses. Some communities specify location on the lot
and specific separation tTom the house (10 feet).

I appreciate your thoughts and comments before the staff or the Planning Commission go further
with this project.

1
