Regular City Council Meeting <br /> Monday,August 25, 2014 <br /> Page 14 <br /> Commissioner Dao noted that last year Parkview dropped even though they had <br /> consistent winners overall, which she attributed to time spent by teachers on crea- <br /> tive writing; which RAMS didn't have due to other curriculum needs (e.g. stand- <br /> ardized testing)making it hard for them to participate. <br /> Mayor Roe recognized that without a teacher or administrator being personally <br /> involved from a particular school, it was just became another thing on their list of <br /> many other things to accomplish. <br /> From his discussions at the state level, Chair Groff noted that the City was fortu- <br /> nate to have as much participation as it did compared to other communities. <br /> Councilmember McGehee thanked the HRC for their informative information <br /> contained in the RCA; and also thanked them for including the 2014 Roseville <br /> and State Essay Contest winner in this year's Rose Parade. <br /> Related to Work Item #6, Councilmember McGehee encouraged the HRC to <br /> change their language from "or" to "and" when considering future community di- <br /> alogues; and while having been favorably impressed based on her participation in <br /> the immigrant experience dialogue, expressed the importance of the mental health <br /> issue that she found discriminatory and occurring in all areas of society. Coun- <br /> cilmember McGehee suggested tying that into the Alzheimer's Alliance group <br /> since that link was already available. In supporting the potential of Work Item#2, <br /> Councilmember McGehee referenced her personal experience in kindness efforts <br /> and her observations of reactions from those experiences, opining that they did <br /> have an impact. <br /> Councilmember Laliberte recognized the past work of the HRC, and her support <br /> of their proposed work items moving forward. <br /> Discussion ensued on the upcoming Karen Organization of Minnesota's Gala on <br /> October 2, and the HRC's sponsorship of a table; and availability of and attend- <br /> ance at the event by HRC members, the Mayor, and City Councilmembers. <br /> Councilmember Laliberte also spoke in support of changing the "or" to "and" on <br /> Work Item #6, opining that mental health and aging issues affected all population <br /> groups, including the immigrant population. <br /> Councilmember Laliberte referenced an upcoming community dialogue at the Ro- <br /> seville Library sponsored by the Humanities Center and U of MN Lifelong Learn- <br /> ing program with three different focuses on October 2, 9 and 16 at 7:00 pm at the <br /> Library and entitled, "Towards a More Perfect Union." <br /> Councilmember Etten congratulated the HRC, opining that splitting the Commu- <br /> nity Engagement work out of the focus of the HRC had proven beneficial allow- <br />
