City of Roseville

Community Development Department

Memo
Jun 6, 1998

TO:

Steve Sarkozy, City Manager

FROM:

Dennis Welsch, ....--ih ~
Community Development Director (490-2232)~

RE:

Midas Muffler Canopy Color

Joe Stranik, President of Midas Muffler has asked that the city reconsider the use of the
color yellow in their awnings, similar to their neighbors to the north who have
incorporated a yellow vinyl window awning into their front window display. Some of the
history of Planning File #1972 is included below:

On May 15, 1989, Richard Stranik, of Midas asked the City for a brick exterior, with no
"yellow" as requested by the City, eliminating some of the black top and adding sod and
shrubs.

On May 27, 1989, R. Stranik worked with his architect to add new concrete wall with
brick exterior, and new steel columns on the existing building.

On June 7, 1989 , Stranik agreed to the planning report that recommended"... the
building facia be constructed in off-white...not bright yellow".

On June 24,1989, the Council CUP condition #4 stated: " ...the building will be
constructed entirely of brick with white facia panels (no yellow)".

Reauest bv Joe Stranik:

Midas now requests clarification - the facia would remain "white", but Midas would like
to add a "yellow" awning. Nothing was specified about this in the CUP. See the
attached awning picture. Frankly, I find the current building to be very stark and bland
architecturally. More landscaping and color would enhance its street appearance.

Since none of the planning staff was here in 1989, I think the best approach may be to
ask Council members if they recall - was their intent to keep color off the entire building
or simply off the building facade - which is currently white with black lettering?

Is there time on a work session in June or July to get this clarification?
Q:\CITY -MGR\MIDAS.MEM

(.;b
<3'
I

'-1)
\9
