Human Rights Commission Minutes
August 20, 2014

Public Comment

There being no one present wishing to speak to the Commission on an item not on the agenda,
the Chair moved to the next agenda item.

Old Business

a.Community-Wide Read

Commissioner Bachhuber stated she had spoken to Jeff Eide from the Roseville Public Library.
He is slightly interested and he likes to do partnerships but recognizes this would be a big job.
He stated he would be open to discussing this further and if the Commission were interested, she
would suggest forming a committee and meeting with Mr. Eide.

Chair Groff asked if this would be something done by the HRC versus the Library.

Commissioner Bachhuber stated if the HRC had a strong proposal of what they wanted, it would
be easier for him to commit to it. She recommended looking for a specific read to potentially
promote.

Youth Commissioner Dao suggested articles versus books because they are shorter and people
can commit to this versus a book.

Commissioner Bachhuber stated she had talked with Judy Woodward, the History Programming
Director at the Roseville Public Library, and she would be open to providing space for
community discussions.

Chair Groff asked if she would work with Youth Commissioner Dao to put together more
information and find an article to review and discuss at the next meeting.

Commissioner Bachhuber stated Ms. Woodward would be doing programming starting in
November on Emerging Communities in Minnesota and reminded her that the HRC would be
available if there was a way the Commission could support her.

b.HRC Recognition of Individuals

Commissioner Bachhuber stated at the last meeting, the Commission had discussed potentially
recognizing individuals. She researched what other communities and Human Rights
Commissions have done. Several host either a breakfast or dinner for community members and
they have nomination forms or different categories such as Youth Leadership or Public Servant.
Most of them were done annually. She asked if this would be something the HRC would be
interested in pursuing.

Commissioner Carey clarified that someone from the community would make the nominations.
