Those reasons would
reiterate many residents' concerns about the potential health and
environmental impacts of the proposed crematorium.

Though some council members wanted to study the
environmental aspects further, others said that the lack of
information was enough to decide.

"Nobody seems definitive on this," said Council Member Dean
Maschka, who drew applause from many residents with the rest
of his comments. "If you've got mercury poisoning, you don't
care if it was "highly unlikely.' We don't have certainty. We
have certain unknowns."

The council will consider the findings at its Aug. 27 meeting.

Mayor John Kysylyczyn and Council Member Craig Klausing
preferred the idea of having the cemetery hire an outside
consultant to further review the environmental and health
Issues.

"We want to have some sound, scientific analysis," the mayor
said.

That motion failed in a 3-2 vote, however, and Kysylyczyn
later voted for the winning motion.

Many residents have opposed the proposed 1,800-square-foot
crematorium on the south side of the cemetery at 803 W.
Larpenteur Ave. Though the Planning Commission had
recommended approval of the project, the City Council tabled
the issue last month.

http://www.pioneerplanet.com/news/mtc_docs/109943.htm

08/1412001

I
I
.J

.".,

j

Ii
v

l
l

: \

11
\.
