City a step closer to denying crematory (8/14/2001)

Search Recent Articles

1___
~

More _SearctLQpti,QllS

__.1

/ NewsQ.~j:1er SubscriQtions
/ Terms and Conditions

/ !'Jewspap~.s 111 EducaJion
/ Helj:1
/ News Archives

/ E.ee.d.b~cJ<
/ Adverfu;jr:1gJnform_~!i()11
/ InternshiQ Information

Page 2 of2

Residents said they were worried about emissions containing
such substances as mercury could have damaging, long-term
health and environmental effects. Mercury, a potentially
poisonous liquid metal, is found in dental fillings. The city
received a petition containing the signatures of more than 200
St. Paul and Roseville residents protesting the crematorium in
July.

Officials from Roselawn Cemetery were not immediately
available during or after the meeting for comment. Previously,
the cemetery has said that the $500,000 crematorium was
needed to meet a growing demand for cremation.

Though a state pollution control official told the council last
month that she did not believe the mercury emissions from the
project would be hazardous, city leaders wanted more certainty.

Residents on Monday said they felt that the council was
listening to their concerns.

"I think they voted their conscience," said neighbor Kris
Beardsley. "They saw the strong opposition in the community
and said we need to vote for our constituents."

Resident Hillevi Peterson said the outcome reflected the impact
citizens could have on City Hall.

"I think they erred on the side of caution instead of commerce," ,
Peterson said. "It was very heartfelt. They listened."

Marisa Agha can be reached at magha@l2.ioneerJ2ress.com or
(651) 228-2109.

@2001 PioneerPlanet I St. Paul (Minnesota) Pioneer Press I TwinCities,com- All Rights Reserved
~QyIight information

http://www.pioneerplanet.com/news/mtc_docs/109943.htm

08/14/2001
