The
building was erected in 1922 by the St. Paul Archdiocese for
a catholic seminary and was designed by the Boston
architectural firm of Maginnis and Walsh (commission No.
518). The bui Iding and campus were purchased by
Northwestern College in 1972 and has since that time served
many diverse functions. The addition presented in this report
infills one of the tWo 'U' shaped courtyards defined by the
original building. This courtyard faces slightly east of south
and is bordered (in the existing building) by the chapel,
academic spaces, and KTIS Radio. . '

The physical manifestation of the college's programmatic
needs in this addition WQS affected by various constraints.

Externally:

- by the varying heights of the building mass defining the
courtyard.
- by the gabled roofs that pitch into the courtyard.
- by the limitation established by the city of Arden Hills
that the addition not expand beyond the walls of Nazaret!1
. Hall. '
- by the' "southern European" style archi tecture on
Nazareth Hall and the desire to blend in with the original
building as much as possible.
- by the presence of the sacristy'in the courtyard and the
wish to preserve this portion of the original building.

Internally:

- by the location of the five major users of the addition in
the existing building - Food Services, KTlS Radio, Blue
Room, Classrooms, and Library.
- by the need to tie the addition into the existing corridor
system for smooth movement and proper egress.
- by the request of the college to maintain natural light on
stained glass windows in the enclosed wall of the chapel.
- by the need for a new entrance into the addition which by
its 'location would become the primar.y public entrance to
the building.

Concept:

The overriding concept of this addition after the functional
needs of the users were satisfied was to relate the exterior
character of the infill to the original building as closely as
possible. The use of pitched tile roofs, modular brick, and

I.
