We believe it is positive and encouraging for people to upgrade their homes
and property. We have no objections to the upgrading of a residence as long as it conforms
to the existing codes and the look and feel of the surrounding houses. We firmly believe
the codes were put in place for a reason and we, in this neighborhood, have worked within
those parameters for forty odd years. There is no rationale or hardship that justifies
deviation in this well established neighborhood. Many beneficial improvements can be
made within this code. The code is there for a reason. Let's enforce it.

We are against the approval of the variance for the street setback. It seems neither
reasonable nor practical for the necessity of two large entry ways (porches) within some 6
to 8 feet of each other on the same
(northeast) corner of the building. The east porch (8' x 12'), which adjoins the driveway, is
the logical entry way if it is raining as it is the closest to people exiting their vehicles. This
side porch appears to alleviate the necessity of a large 10' x 9' entry to the front of the house
to protect people in the event of inclement weather. The current front steps measure
approximately 5' wide and maybe 6' feet deep counting the sidewalk. In addition, it is
open. No structure surrounding it.

Approving the front variance would make it the only house in the immediate neighborhood
that would extend closer to the street than the stated code distance.

Many of us had the necessity of rebuilding our homes after the 1981 tornado. The required
damage repair from that tornado gave us an opportunity to upgrade our homes. Most of us
immediately surrounding 420 Terrace Drive did upgrade or rebuild from the ground up.
To our knowledge NO ONE in this neighborhood built forward. We believed the codes
meant something and we all worked within the parameters of the street setback code. If we
made any additions or modifications, we went out the back, which did not interfere with
the designed layout of the neighborhood. The result was neat and clean -- not a
"hodgepodge" of very different size houses with varying offsets.
